According to the South China Morning Post on Sept. 11, executives from Malaysia's low-cost carrier AirAs expressed strong interest in purchasing the Chinese C919 passenger aircraft as part of its strategy to tap into the potential of Southeast Asia's market and leverage the increasingly close economic and relations between China and ASEAN. Tony Fernandes, CEO of AirAsia's parent company Capital A, stated at the "Belt and Road Summit Forum held in Hong Kong on the 10th: "We are actively discussing the purchase of the C919." He added: "We are first foreign airline to cooperate with COMAC (on the C919 passenger aircraft deal)." Malaysian Transport Minister Loke Yuen Fatt previously stated both AirAsia and Borneo Airlines have shown interest in the C919, mainly due to the continuous growth of regional air travel and the backlog of orders forbus and Boeing.
